Update - November 19

Room 205 was very busy this week!

We started our week with a beautiful Mass!  Liam and Molly did a great job with their Readings and Petitions.  Everyone did so nice as they sang their "This Little Light of Mine" song as a Communion Reflection - teachers and Fr. Rob were all so proud :)

Here we are singing This Little Light of Mine at Mass--

We also completed our 'Called to Protect' Program.  Ask your child what their sixth sense is :)

We enjoyed our second part of our Unit on the Deaf and people with disabilities.  We read four stories about a child named Moses who was deaf.  We traveled with him as he went from School, to a Concert, to a Play, and to the Circus!  We learned lots of sign language along the way.  As we reviewed Authors Purpose and Cause and Effect in each one we also looked at the correct way to use the articles a, an, and the.  To complete the unit, each child learned to say, "Hi, My name is ______. I am ____ years old.  Mrs. Horner videoed each child and sent them to the parents.  Let me know if you did not receive yours!

In Math, we are continuing to add two 2-digit numbers.  The way envision teaches the students to add is a little different then most of us are used to.  Not to worry - they will learn both ways in Third Grade.

A lot of time was spent on Reconciliation this week.  Fr. Don came into our class and did a few practice confessions to help make us feel more comfortable on December 1st.  We are singing and praying so that our special day is perfect :)

A big congratulations to Liam S.  He will be baptized this Sunday at 1:30 - feel free to stop by church and congratulate him :)  Welcome to the Catholic Church Liam!!

Update - November 12

We had a beautiful week!

In Language Arts, we began a two week unit on the Deaf and Sign Language.  This first week we read and listened to a story called Meet Rosina.  It is about a second grade deaf girl and the similarities and differences she has in her day because she is deaf.  We are practicing the ASL sign language alphabet and by the end of next week, we hope to be able to spell our names!  In Grammar, we are working on the Subject and Predicate in a sentence.  We watched a video, completed several worksheets, and did a Subject/Predicate Scoot to help us recognize the Subject and Predicate in a sentence,  This story is from an old Treasures Series Reading Book but is a great beginning to our unit.

In Math, we are working on more strategies (like adding the tens and ones separately and then putting them together) to help us solve adding two 2-digit numbers.  We will work on picking the one that works best for us soon!

In Handwriting, we began cursive.  We were very excited to get our new name tags with our name in Cursive!!

In Religion, we are learning about the 10 Commandments!  We created our own Book to help us understand what each Commandment means in a way we can understand.  We are also learning a song to help us remember them when we Examine our Conscience before Reconciliation! Next week we will look at the Penance Form and the Called to Protect program :)

Don't forget to finish your Jesus Book - you can bring it in as soon as you complete it :)

Room 205 will attend the Book Fair on November 17th at 11:10 to make any purchases parents would like them to have.  Please send your money in any envelope with your child's name and Room #.

Update - November 5

 Just a wonderful Fall week!!

Our story in our Rooted in Reading Series was The Rough Face Girl.  This story is compared to Cinderella - check it out on youtube.com!  Since it has similarities,  we used the two stories to work on the skill of Comparing and Contrasting.  We also looked at how often a Mental Image helps us to understand a story and the what the Author wants us to see or learn from the story.  In Grammar, we spent a lot of time working on adjectives.  What they are, how to find them in a sentence, and how to add them to a sentence ourselves.  We even did an Adjective Scoot help us find adjectives in a sentence - lots of fun :)

In Math, we looked at strategies to add two digit numbers to solve word problems.  We even used a buddy to help us solve two step word problems!  Listening to the students collaborate to solve these problems was wonderful and they really talked about the steps they needed to take!!!

In Religion, we finished our discussion of Confirmation and are beginning to look at the Church Year as we also begin our look at Reconciliation!  It was exciting to see two of our students dress up for All Saints Day!

Fr. Don shared this picture of him receiving Communion from the Pope - very cool!

Keep working on those Jesus Books!!

 Just a reminder:

Mrs. Horner will be available for conferences on Monday, November 22nd.  These are by teacher or parent request only.  If you would like to have a conference with Mrs. Horner, please send her an email and she will send you a link to sign up.  If Mrs. Horner would like a conference with you, she will send you the link in an email :)

We enjoyed making Thankful Turkeys for the Hall :)
