Update - October 29

We had a creepy week (our book in Reading was about Spiders!!)

In our October Rooted in Reading Series, we ended the month with a non-fiction book about Spiders by Gail Gibbons.  Not only did we learn what makes a non-fiction book, but we also learned to locate facts in a nonfiction book!

In Grammar, we practiced putting the correct punctuation on a sentence.  Beginning with a capital letter and choosing the correct end mark!

In Math, we began a new chapter on strategies to add two digit numbers.  Our first strategy was using a Hundred Chart.  We moved down for tens and across for ones :)

We are finishing up our last few letters in Manuscript Review and are getting excited to learn all about cursive!

We had a beautiful Enrollment Ceremony last Sunday.  The students all received their lamb pin and are now officially getting ready for Reconciliation and First Eucharist!

                            Whitney read her petition beautifully!
Scarlet did a great job presenting the gifts!

We really enjoyed joining our 8th grade friends to say the Living Rosary with our whole school.  It was a beautiful experience :)

We can't believe our first quarter of second grade is already over - we have enjoyed every minute!!

Mrs. Horner will be available for conferences on Monday, November 22nd.  These are by teacher or parent request only.  If you would like to have a conference with Mrs. Horner, please send her an email and she will send you a link to sign up.  If Mrs. Horner would like a conference with you, she will send you the link in an email :)

Update - October 22

Such a beautiful week!

Here is how we start each Wednesday :)

This week we continued our October Theme with the Rooted in Reading story - Stellaluna!  If you don't remember this friendship story - check it out on youtube.com :)  We looked at the skill of Problem and Solution and continued our study of putting a story in the correct sequential order.  This was a big help for our first Book Report!  We also concentrated on choosing a stronger verb in our writing to make it more fun and interesting to read!

In Math, we are looking at arrays as a preview to multiplication next year.  We now know that an array is repeated addition which is multiplication!

In Handwriting, we are continuing with our printed (manuscript) alphabet and only have a few letters left before we are introduced to cursive!!

Don't forget to continue to complete your Jesus Book :)

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Enrollment Mass this Sunday at 9:30!  We will soon have a pin to remind us that we are getting ready to receive two sacraments this year :)

Update October 15, 2021

 Such beautiful weather this week!

Even though we were a day short, we still completed a fun October story in our Rooted in Reading series.  Our story was called Crankenstein.  We looked at sequencing and making connections.  We covered these skills last week in our I Need My Monster story so it was interesting to see how the skills could also relate to another story and how important they are to a story.

In Grammar, we looked at shades of meaning and synonyms.  We were also introduced to quotes and quotation marks.  Students do well with this concept in class but it is  little harder putting it in print!

In Math, we worked on even and odd numbers and how to tell if a number is even or odd just by looking at the ones place!

In Religion, we looked at the 7 sacraments and were happy to learn that we received one already and will receive two more by the end of the year.  We liked learning what the other sacraments are and who in our families have already received some of them!

We were excited to receive our Jesus Books at our Parent Meeting and look forward to completing them with our parents help - we are ready to begin working in them right away :)

We enjoyed going to our White Mass (for the medical profession) on Friday!  What would we do without them!!

Here are our Baptism posters in the Hall :)

Update - October 7

What beautiful weather this week :)

We began our month of fun October stories in our Rooted in Reading Series.  Our story this week was I Need My Monster.  As always - check out the story on youtube.com if you would like to see what your child is reading in class!  This story concentrated on the skill of sequencing.  We read and listened to the story, and then put it in sequential order.  We discussed how different this and other stories would be if we changed the order of what happened in the story!  We had fun pulling out the creepy words too :)

We also concentrated on more nouns.  This week we looked at the difference between common and proper nouns.  This is still tough for many second graders but we are getting better!

In Math, we completed our unit on strategies to add and subtract.  We traveled in Math Stations to review the strategies and throw in some word problems too!  Next week, we move on to odd and even numbers and arrays!

Working on Math Strategies!

In Religion,  we are looking at the sacraments.  Fr. Don did a pretend Baptism for us since most of us were too young to remember - lol :)

Baptism Poster creation!

We ended our week with Walk to School Day - we really enjoyed the beautiful weather and praying the Rosary with the school at the end!

We hope everyone enjoys their long weekend - it will be our last for awhile :)

Update - October 1

 What a beautiful week!

In our Rooted in Reading Series, we read and discussed the story When I Was Young in the Mountains.  This story takes place in the Appalachian Mountains.  A perfect lead in to our skill of the week - Setting.  We discussed how important the Setting is to the story and how much this story would have to change if it happened in Fairview Park in 2021!  In Grammar, we looked at nouns - the difference between Proper Nouns (which we will look at next week) and General Nouns was a difficult concept for second graders.  We worked hard and Mrs. Horner is pleased with the results :)

Since they purchased their butter from the General Store in our story, we tried making our own butter!

In Math, we looked at different strategies we could use to help us subtract a little faster.  We hope this shows in our xtra math scores!  We ended the week reviewing addition and subtraction facts to help get us ready for an assessment next week.

In Handwriting, we are continuing to review the correct way to make lower case letters - concentrating on shape and spacing!

In Religion, we are beginning a chapter that reminds us we are Catholics and belong to the Catholic Church which has 7 sacraments - we will concentrate on Baptism next week!

In Science, we are learning about he Scientific Process.  This week we used bubbles to help us put our experiment in the Scientific Process formula.  We began with the Question - Does the shape of the wand determine what the bubble looks like?  Ask your child what the conclusion was :)

On Thursday, we had our first Faith Family meeting.  Since these second graders have not had a Faith Family meeting since Kindergarten, we took a tour of the school to see where all the rooms are so we could find our group - Success!  Not one of us got lost :)
